What are these Christ-Focused book reviews?

I'm all for reading - widely. But if we Christ-followers do so without discernment we'll quickly be sucked into the philosophies and doctrines of the age that are NOT aimed at honoring or following Christ.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. ~ Colossians 2:8

Christ-followers follow Christ. We follow Him more than we follow other people. More than we subscribe to various philosophies. More than we ascribe to causes. More than various teachings or strategies. And books are one of the primary tools used in modern times to express all of those things. That means that Christ-followers need to filter every book they read through the truth of Christ Himself. That requires hard work and even harder thinking. My "book notes" series is an ongoing attempt to help my Christ-following brothers and sisters do that hard work more effectively. The books I read and highlight in this series are not necessarily written by authors who claim to follow Jesus. But they are books worth reading. Therefore we need to read them with Holy Spirit inspired discernment. What you'll find my book notes are my personal notes, my interactions with what each author says in light of what Jesus has said in the pages of the Bible. The point in doing that kind of comparison comparison is simple: What Jesus says is what matters. If He’s graced an author with insights that correspond with His teachings, I embrace their insights. If He hasn’t, I don’t. It’s as simple as that.

Why have I made these Christ-focused book reviews public?

I'm sharing my notes with you as an example of what you need to do as you read. My background as a Bible teacher, along with the gracious gift of God I've been given to be a teacher for His people, give me confidence that these summaries will help you learn how to read discerningly for yourself. And if you already know how to do that, perhaps my insights will spark yours and facilitate your growth in Christ in some other way.I don't pretend to see everything clearly but when I feel that I do see something clearly I want to put it out there for others to read, interact with, and even challenge. That's how we're able to practice the spirit of the famous verse...
